What Is Warhammer 40k?

Warhammer 40,000, or 40k as it is known, is a tabletop war game played in a dark future. The planets are inhabited by super human armies of humans, aliens, robots and creatures that war against each other. Light against dark, good versus evil, Humans versus Ork.

The human side of the game is in general represented with the Space Marines. Armour clad warriors with bolt pistols and a love for order and war. Their enemy is the Ork race, a vile, loathsome race of war hungry idiots that have vigor in numbers.

The game itself is played on a model landscape and involves 2 or more players acting out a war or scenario with small plastic or metal figures and vehicle. This game can take the form of army versus army, but can also involve capturing objectives such as buildings or weapons.

Each player takes it in turn to move their army a preset length using a tape quantum and then decide if they want to shoot the opposition or carry out other manoeuvres such as charging, retreating or occupying a building. If they select to shoot their weapons or engage the enemy, dice must be rolled to decide the outcome of their actions. Depending on the kind of weapons they are using (which is determined by the compose of the plastic figure and what weapon they are really holding) and what armour the opponent has, the dice roll will decide if the shot has hit or not.

The player then rolls a dice to decide if they have wounded the opposition who then gets a occasion to make an "Armour Save" roll to dodge being killed or wounded. Each army or vertebrate has distinct statistics that make them more or less suited than others. Space Marines are good shots, have lots or armour to save them from damage but are slow. Orks on the other hand have little armour but gain advantages when in hand to hand combat.

A major aspect of Warhammer 40k is the collecting and painting of the figures. Supplied as unmade, grey plastic, the figures must be assembled and painted before use. It is up to the player how they are decorated and which weapons they will use, which can make all the difference to how the game is played.

Armies can be added to by the purchase of further figures and vehicles that will give extra attacks, quick exciting soldiery or devastating firepower at your disposal. Some game types will be best played with flying vehicles that can drop off soldiery and others will benefit from snipers or road vehicles. The diversity of the models and game types is what sets Warhammer 40k apart from similar board games.
